# Readbase vs Matter: what a reader without summaries costs you

> Canonical page: https://readbase.io/compare/readbase-vs-matter

Matter is a read-later app for articles, blogs and newsletters, with no AI summaries on either plan. Readbase does newsletters only, and summarises every newsletter free, so you know what is worth reading before you open it.

## Choose Readbase if

- You want help finding newsletters actually worth reading, not just a better place to pile up the ones you already have.
- You want the best newsletter reader, not a read-later app with a newsletter feature bolted on.
- You want every newsletter summarised automatically. Matter has no AI summaries at all, on either plan.
- You want a morning briefing across everything unread, rather than a longer queue to work through.
- You would rather not pay $60 a year to unlock full-text search over your own reading.

## How a Readbase summary is written

01. **The whole newsletter gets read** - A long newsletter is split into sections and every section is processed, so the piece buried at the bottom counts as much as the lead story. Summarisers that take one pass at whatever fits in a context window quietly lose the second half.
02. **Ideas are pulled out, not guessed** - Each section is mined for the ideas it actually contains. The models are instructed to stay strictly inside the text: no speculation, no inference, no outside knowledge. You get what the writer wrote.
03. **An editor writes the final version** - A second pass turns the complete set of ideas into 3 or 4 bullets, each a full thought of roughly 30 to 45 words, focused on what matters and why. No filler, no throat-clearing, no "this newsletter discusses".

## Questions people ask

### What is the main difference between Readbase and Matter?

Matter is a read-later app that happens to accept newsletters. Readbase is built for them. Matter has no AI summaries on either plan, so every newsletter in your queue looks identical until you open it, and you find out whether it was worth opening afterwards. Readbase writes a real summary and a reading time for every newsletter as it lands. That is the difference between clearing twenty newsletters in two minutes and losing an evening to them.

### Does Matter summarise newsletters?

No, on either plan. Matter's features sit around the reading itself: text-to-speech, highlighting, tagging, search. Useful once you have opened something. No help at all with a queue of twenty.

### Is Matter free?

There is a free tier covering what Matter calls basic read-it-later: an unlimited library, saving from mobile and web, parsing and readability, and unlimited tags. Premium is $8 a month or $60 a year and adds HD text-to-speech, highlighting and note-taking, integrations, full-text search and priority support. Readbase includes AI summaries on every newsletter on its free plan.

### Can I move my existing newsletters over?

Matter connects to Gmail and copies your subscriptions across. Readbase gives you an @readbase.io address and you resubscribe with it. That is more work on day one, and it buys you something Matter's approach cannot: Readbase never touches your personal email, and your newsletters stop landing there at all instead of being duplicated out of it. One is a shortcut. The other is the fix.

### Does either one have an Android app?

Neither. Matter runs on iPhone, iPad and web. Readbase runs on iPhone and in any browser, so Android users read on the web with the same inbox, the same AI summaries and the same 1-click unsubscribe.
